Wardrobe · Sweat

He spent eleven years fixing his sweating. The answer was a €39 layer he never saw.

Clinical antiperspirants, disposable pads, a navy-only wardrobe, even a Botox consultation. None of it worked, because all of it was aimed at the wrong thing. Here's what finally did.

Daniel is 36, an account manager in Rotterdam, and for most of his working life he has been managing a second job nobody pays him for: keeping his arms down.

He knows the exact moment it starts. Twenty minutes into a client meeting, the room a degree too warm, and he feels the first cold patch spread under his arm.

He drove to meetings instead of cycling. He kept a spare shirt in the car and changed in the car park, which worked until the day a colleague walked past.

"I wasn't worried about sweating. I was worried about someone noticing I was worried about sweating."

By his own count he had been at this for eleven years. The remarkable thing, looking back, is how much money and effort he put into the problem, and how little of it was aimed at the part that was actually going wrong.

What he tried — and what finally worked

Daniel kept the receipts, more or less. Laid out in order, the list reads less like a man failing and more like a man solving the wrong equation very thoroughly.

What he tried What happened
Clinical antiperspirant €14 · pharmacy strength
Genuinely drier for about two days. Then the skin under both arms turned red and itched through meetings. By mid-afternoon there was a smell anyway.
Disposable sweat pads €0.40 each · used daily
Peeled loose within a few hours and bunched into a visible ridge under a fitted shirt. Cost him roughly €120 a year to feel self-conscious about something new.
A plain cotton undershirt €8 · three-pack
Soaked through and stayed wet. The extra layer made him hotter, and wet cotton held onto the smell for the rest of the day.
Only buying navy and white shirts Most of a wardrobe
Worked well enough that he did it for four years. Grey, light blue and any linen were out. He owned one pale shirt he never wore.
A Botox consultation Quoted €600+, twice a year
He booked it, sat in the waiting room, read the aftercare leaflet and left. Needles under both arms every six months, indefinitely, for something he still thought of as a laundry problem.
Washing shirts after every wear ~6 loads a week
Collars frayed inside a year. And the smell came back before lunch regardless, which should have told him something sooner than it did.
LABFRESH sweat-proof undershirt The solution he kept
A triple-layered underarm panel helps keep moisture from reaching his outer shirt, while FreshCore tackles odour in the fabric. One layer under the clothes he already owns.

Daniel's account is a composite drawn from customer interviews; his name has been changed.

Why none of it was ever going to work

Put the list in front of a dermatologist and the pattern is immediate. Almost every item on it is aimed at wetness. Only one of them — washing — goes anywhere near the smell. And the wetness and the smell come from two different places.

The mechanism, briefly

  1. Sweat leaves the body essentially odourless. Eccrine sweat, the kind that cools you, is roughly 99% water and salt. On its own it smells of nothing.
  2. The armpit is different. Apocrine glands there release a thicker secretion containing lipids and proteins — still odourless as it arrives.
  3. Skin bacteria feed on that secretion and break it down. Staphylococci — chiefly Staphylococcus hominis — convert it into thioalcohols, the compounds behind the sharp, sulphurous note the human nose detects at extraordinarily low concentrations. Corynebacterium works a second route, producing the acidic, cheesy notes.
  4. Aluminium-based antiperspirants form temporary plugs in the eccrine ducts. That reduces wetness. The aluminium itself does little about the bacterial step — that's what the deodorant half of a combined stick is for — and the plugs wash out within a day or so.

Which is why Daniel's eleven years produced so little. He was treating a two-part problem with one-part solutions — and a wet cotton undershirt actively helps the second part along, because damp fabric held against warm skin is close to an ideal culture medium.

Solve it properly and you need two things happening at once, on the surface that sits against the skin all day: the moisture has to be pulled away and dispersed before it can reach the outer shirt, and the bacterial step has to be interrupted in the fabric itself. Almost nothing in a normal wardrobe does either. A garment engineered to do both is not a deodorant problem. It's a textiles problem.

How it works

What's actually different about it

The garment is a LABFRESH sweat-proof undershirt, from a Dutch textiles company that started in a lab rather than a design studio. Two things separate it from every cotton layer Daniel had tried, and both are structural rather than cosmetic.

1. A triple-layered panel, only where it's needed

The underarm carries a discreet three-layer construction instead of a single thickness of fabric. The inner layer takes moisture off the skin, the middle core absorbs and spreads it across a wide area so it can evaporate as vapour rather than pool, and the outer barrier stops anything reaching the shirt on top. LABFRESH rates the panel to up to 2 litres of liquid. The point isn't the number — it's that the moisture leaves as vapour instead of sitting in a wet patch.

How the underarm panel works

1. Inner layer

Draws moisture away from your skin.

2. Absorbent core

Absorbs and spreads moisture across the panel.

3. Outer barrier

Helps prevent moisture reaching the shirt you wear on top.

2. Odour control bonded into the yarn, not sprayed on it

The second part is the bacterial step. LABFRESH calls its treatment FreshCore, and the distinction they draw is where it sits: wrapped around each individual yarn rather than applied as a surface finish. A coating on the outside of a fabric is the first thing a washing machine removes. Something bonded at yarn level survives the wash, which is the difference between a garment that works for a month and one that still works after a year. The company states it repels up to 99.9% of odour-causing bacteria, and tests every production batch for odour control, moisture management and wrinkle recovery.

The fabric itself is a eucalyptus-derived fibre rather than cotton — softer, and it doesn't shrink or hold moisture the way a cotton vest does. It's made with yarns verified to OEKO-TEX Standard 100 and bluesign, which matters for something worn against skin all day.

Eleven years, undone in about a week

Daniel says the first thing he noticed wasn't dryness. It was that he'd got to the end of a Thursday without having checked. No discreet arm-press in the lift, no angling away from the window. The habit took another fortnight to fully break.

  • The blazer comes off in warm rooms. He gestures with both hands.
  • Grey, light blue and linen are back in the wardrobe. The pale shirt gets worn.
  • Two undershirts cover a four-day trip, so hand luggage is enough.
  • Six wash loads a week became two. Shirts last longer as a side effect.
  • He cycles to meetings again.

He now owns four. The spare shirt is still in the car, he admits, but it's been in there since spring.

He is not an unusual case

LABFRESH says it has shipped to more than 200,000 customers across 98 countries. The independent picture is reasonably consistent with that.

What happens if it doesn't work for you

This is the part that made Daniel order rather than bookmark. The garment carries a performance guarantee rather than a general returns policy — meaning it's the performance itself that's being underwritten, not just the fit.

LABFRESH Performance Guarantee

Twelve months, on the performance itself

If the undershirt stops doing what it promises on sweat-blocking or odour control within twelve months of purchase, LABFRESH exchanges it for a new one. Every production batch is tested for odour control, moisture management and wrinkle recovery before it ships.

Free exchanges, either way

Wrong size, wrong neckline, or a garment that isn't performing — exchanges are handled free of charge.

Worth knowing, in plain terms. The performance guarantee is resolved by exchange, not refund, and it doesn't cover normal wear, oil-based stains, deodorant discolouration, or damage from tumble-drying, fabric softener or high heat — all of which degrade the treatment.
  • Exchanges are free. A refund is available within 30 days, but only on unworn, unwashed items with tags attached, and €5 is deducted for return shipping.
  • So: if you wear it and it disappoints, the remedy is an exchange under the performance guarantee — not your money back. Decide on that basis.

The one he bought

Start with one, not a wardrobe

One undershirt, worn under what you already own, for five working days. That's the whole test — and it's backed for a year on the only thing that matters here.
